Work is hard. Good work requires serious effort; however, it is important to try to find joy even in the most demanding field because it’s easy to get burnt out, lose yourself in the process, and forget the impact of the work that you do.

Here are 5 simple ways to find joy, even in the most demanding field:

  •  Know Your Why: Why have you decided to work in this field, and what do you aim to achieve with all of the work that you put in? When the reason for work is clear, it becomes easier  to get up, and get things done without feeling lost or disdainful toward the work you do.

Action: Analyze what you aim to achieve and identify if the work you’re doing aligns with that. If you still feel burnt out or bad about it, observe if you feel disconnected. If so,  look at what you truly want and redirect your efforts to what aligns with that goal.

  • Prioritize Self-Care: You have bills to pay and responsibilities to deal with, which makes it almost impossible  not to throw yourself into work. However, it is important  to understand that you must  be mentally and physically sound to perform optimally at work. It’s easy for the burden of routine to affect you, and you may struggle to find joy in what you’re doing.

Action: Take time off. Schedule your leave,  block out  work-related tasks, and focus on yourself. Go for your routine check-ups and incorporate daily self-care habits, such as taking a walk at lunch, stretching your muscles, calling a close friend or relative during breaks, drinking lots of water, and taking vitamins. Self-care also means saying “No” when necessary,  especially to tasks that are not assigned to you, and avoid being a pushover.

  • Have a Good Work-Life Balance: Work is important,  but so are you and your loved ones. Recently, a young professional passed away, and her mother took to LinkedIn to explain how the workload left her no time for herself.  When she died, no one from work came to her funeral. Her mother encouraged creating a good balance and avoiding  overburdening oneself.

Action: Don’t work beyond work hours unless absolutely necessary. Learn how to say “No.” Take your weekends to spend time with family.  Work with people who care and are supportive.

  • Search for the Value in What You Do: When you look at the bigger picture and the value you are creating with your work, it becomes easier  to appreciate it more. For example, your telemarketing task helps your company close deals, and your customer service builds your company’s reputation.

Action: Look at the task you are about to do and attach a value to it. This will remind you of the role it plays and can bring joy, even in the most stressful scenario.

  • Be Consistent: Do not pour all your energy into work for two weeks, and then slack off in the next two. Avoid burnout by building consistency into all  your routines. Create a simple routine  that promotes both ease and  productivity.

Action: Incorporate a routine that ensures you do good work, sleep well, eat healthily, and rest every day to avoid imbalance and burnout.

Conclusion

Finding joy when your profession is demanding can be very difficult. However, it is important for your optimal performance at work. Knowing your why, prioritizing self-care, building consistency, maintaining a good work-life balance, and finding meaning in every task you do are guaranteed ways to  find joy, even in the most tasking field.
